Your questions, answered
What’s a mortgage mentor or advisor?
A Mortgage Mentor (also known as an advisor) is very similar to a mortgage broker. They act as the intermediary between you and the bank. But a Mortgage Mentor goes one step further to offer ongoing financial advice and mentorship.
How do I find one?
To find a normal mortgage broker, you will need to ask for recommendations in your network or search online. To team up with one of our Mortgage Mentors, you can request a free chat here.
Will a mentor help me pay the mortgage off faster?
Yes! Your mentor’s tools, systems, and ongoing mentorship are here to help you pay your mortgage off faster than the typical 30-year term.
How much does it all cost?
Zero dollars – you don’t pay your NZHL Mortgage Mentor. They get paid by the lenders.
Can I get approved quickly with a mentor?
It’s likely you could get your application approved quicker when you team up with a mentor. This can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. If you did this by yourself, it could take 2-6 weeks.
At what point should I reach out to a mentor?
If you’re thinking about buying a house in the future, now is a great time to book an initial chat. A Mortgage Mentor can help you get prepared well before you send in the home loan application.
Can I work with multiple brokers or mentors?
While you can talk to multiple brokers or mentors, we don’t recommend this. It’s best to choose one person to help you with your mortgage application. Working with more than one person may be detrimental to your chances of getting approved.
Can you help me get a better interest rate?
Your Mortgage Mentor is here to help you put your best foot forward when you apply for a mortgage. The lenders consider your financial situation (e.g., income and expenses) and your ability to repay the loan. Your mentor will work with you to get you in a good position to command a better interest rate before you send in the application.
Do I need to pay for an insurance broker?
No. The great news is that our mentors are qualified financial advisors that can help you with your insurance too. They get paid a commission by the insurance company they place your insurance with.
